Implantation bleeding
Have you ever wondered how it can be that a pregnant woman still bleeds? Or maybe you have heard about the implantation bleeding but you don’t know where it comes from?
Well, basically yes, pregnant women can still bleed. However, this is not very common during your pregnancy but just during the day of the implantation. The implantation bleeding is defined as a small amount of light spotting or bleeding that, typically, occurs about 10 to 14 days after conception which is when the implantation is done. It is quite common and it usually isn’t a sign of a problem.
But how do I know if it is implantation bleeding, menstruation or a problem with the pregnancy?
There are some indicators that can help you identify whether it’s your period or the implantation bleeding. Timing is not a good one since the implantation bleeding usually occurs when your period is meant to start.
However, there are others such as:
- Amount of blood: implantation bleeding is typically only spotting or a very light flow. Most of the women only notice it when they wipe.
- Color: meanwhile menstrual bleeding is typically bright red or even dark red, implantation bleeding is much lighter even pink or rust color.
- Clotting: implantation bleeding should never have clots.
- Duration: implantation bleeding typically only lasts anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
If you are worried because you do not know for sure if you are having your period or if its implantation bleeding, the best solution is to take a pregnancy test.
And why does implantation bleeding happen?
It happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus as we can see in the “stages of development” article. The attachment and subsequent movement of the embryo in the uterine wall can break down small blood vessels and cause this bit of bleeding. It’s important to note that implantation bleeding doesn’t happen for everyone—or even for every pregnancy. About one in three women experience implantation bleeding upon conception.
Is it dangerous to have implantation bleeding?
Must I be concerned? Not at all. The embryo is not at risk and you shouldn’t be alarmed if there is implantation-related bleeding. But, whether early on in your pregnancy or later on, if you encounter prolonged or severe bleeding, call your physician right away or go to an emergency room, there is a huge difference between implantation bleeding and bleeding during your pregnancy.
